Holocaust unit · Lesson 3What the world lost, and why we remember

Then or now?

Twenty things that really happened. Half of them between 1918 and 1945, half between 2017 and 2026. The names, dates and places have been removed. Some cards come with a photo, shown in black and white and zoomed in on one detail until you answer. Your job: decide which era each one belongs to.

These cards describe real attacks on Jewish people, including recent ones. Nothing here is graphic, but none of it is made up.

All twenty events, with sources

Each "then" event has a "now" echo, and the game names the pair when a card is revealed. The stage labels come from Gregory H. Stanton's ten stages of genocide (Genocide Watch), whose central claim is that genocide is predictable but not inevitable — at each stage, preventive measures can stop it.

Prepared for Lesson 3 of the Riverbank Learning of Idaho Holocaust unit. Content follows the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Guidelines for Teaching About the Holocaust: no simulations, no ranking of suffering, no graphic imagery. Every card links to its source; verify against the original before citing it in your own work.
